The primary difference between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies is range as the 2.4GHz frequency is able to reach farther than the 5GHz frequency. This is a result of the basic characteristics that waves attenuate much faster at higher frequencies. So if you are more concerned with the coverage, you should select 2.4GHz rather than 5GHz.
The second difference is the number of devices on the frequencies. 2.4GHz suffers more interference than 5GHz.
The older 11g standard only uses the 2.4GHz frequency, majority of the world is on it. 2.4 GHz has fewer channel options with only three of them non-overlapping, while 5GHz has 23 non-overlapping channels.
A lot of other devices are also on the 2.4 GHz frequencies, the biggest offenders are microwaves and cordless phones. These devices add noise to the medium that can further decrease the speed of wireless networks.
In both aspects, choosing to deploy on the 5GHz frequency is a much better option as you have more channels to use to isolate yourself from other networks and there are far fewer interference sources.
But the radar and military frequency is also 5GHz, so 5GHz wireless may also have some interference, and many countries require that wireless devices working on 5GHz should support DFS(Dynamic Frequency Selection) and TPC(Transmitting Power Control).
Summary:
5GHz has a shorter range compared with 2.4GHz;
The 2.4GHz frequency is way more crowded than 5GHz, devices on 2.4GHz suffer much more interference than the ones on 5GHz;
Fewer devices are capable of using the 5GHz channel than the 2.4GHz channel.
If there is too much interference around and your clients support 5GHz, it's recommended to use 5GHz wireless network, otherwise you’d better select 2.4GHz.
MAC filtering is used to deny or allow specific client devices to access your network by MAC address

(1)What is channel.
A channel, also called a channel or a frequency band, is a data signal transmission channel that uses a wireless signal as a transmission carrier. The working frequency of the 2.4G frequency band is 2.4-2.4835GHz. The 83.5MHz frequency band is divided into 13 channels. The center frequency of each channel differs by 5MHz.
Similar wireless routers using the same or overlapping channels will form a channel competition relationship and affect the quality of wireless links. In order to effectively avoid mutual interference caused by channel overlapping, adjacent wireless routers should choose non-overlapping channels to work, such as (1, 6, 11). ), (1, 7, 13), etc., but the wireless router does not only work on these channels.
(2)Channel recommendation is automatically selected.
The function of automatic wireless channel selection is: channel overlap will cause mutual interference between wireless routers, which will affect the quality of wireless transmission. The automatic channel selection function enables the router to automatically set the best working channel according to the surrounding wireless environment, effectively avoiding co-channel interference/competition.
(3)Under what circumstances do you need to manually select the channel.
① When setting up WDS wireless relay, it is recommended to set a fixed channel.
② Some wireless terminals may not be able to identify channel 12 or 13. When the router automatically selects these two channels, the wireless terminal cannot search for signals. At this time, the channel of the router needs to be fixed between 1-11.
③ Severe wireless interference. The automatic wireless channel selection function will automatically set the best working channel according to the current environment after the router is started, and the channel will not change until the router restarts. However, in the actual environment, the surrounding wireless environment may have changed during the working process of the router. , causing strong wireless interference, you need to consider setting the channel manually at this time.
(4)How to manually select the best channel
When manually setting the channel of the router, it is necessary to avoid using the same channel as other surrounding wireless signals to avoid co-channel interference. So how can we know the channel used by other wireless signals around?
Using third-party software, the software can scan the channel and signal strength of wireless signals in the surrounding environment.
① Android: wifi magic box
② Windows: Inssider
(1)Check whether the 2.4G and 5G SSIDs of each router are configured with passwords and encryption methods.
(2)Check the direct distance between the main router and the sub-router, and keep within 15 meters to ensure a good WIFI signal between the routers.
(3)Make sure the MESH function in the router is enabled and the role is set to auto, if you specify the role of each router. You can also set the corresponding Controller and Agent roles.
(4)Ensure the WIFI channel interference in the mesh networking environment. If there is channel interference from other wireless devices, please select the appropriate working channel in the WIFI configuration items of the main route and the sub-router and then re-establish the network.
(5)Make sure that no other device initiates a WPS connection in the mesh networking environment.
(1)Log in to the router's web management and check whether the WAN IP of the main router is normal. If you normally use the diagnostic tool to check whether you can access the Internet (refer to FAQ17), if you cannot access the Internet, please contact the operator
(2)Check whether the routers of each node go online normally
(3)Make sure that only the main router is connected to the WAN port, and the Mesh role is Controller. Because Ceres routers are factory-set with the Mesh role configured as automatic. In MESH networking interaction, the most suitable router will be automatically selected as the Controller. The Controller in the MESH network can be dynamically changed. If the WAN port of the current Controller router is DOWN, then the router with the original role of Agent can be connected to the WAN port to automatically become the Controller role, and the network needs to be reorganized.
(4)Ensure the WIFI channel interference in the Mesh networking environment, and whether other wireless devices initiate a WPS connection. If there is wireless interference, the WIFI working channel will be changed after the router is restarted, resulting in Mesh network recovery problems.
(5)Re-networking after restoring to factory settings
WIFI signal strength and range depend on factors such as frequency band, radio power output, receiver sensitivity, antenna gain, and antenna type. The environment also plays a very important role in the coverage and performance of the router. Floors, walls, obstacles and radio signal interference can weaken the WIFI signal.
So, in many cases, the easiest and low-cost way to improve WIFI coverage is to move the router to a better location. Here, we will provide some options for your reference.
1)Put the router in the middle
2)Put the router at a certain height
Home routers generally use omnidirectional antennas, which radiate around horizontally and are weaker vertically. Place your router on a table or shelf to better utilize the transmission from the antenna.
3)Stay away from high-power appliances
High-power appliances and metal products may cause signal interference. Note that electrical appliances include microwaves, refrigerators, TVs, etc.
4)avoid obstacles
One of the materials most likely to block WIFI signals is metal. Refrigerators, walls, cabinets, furniture, or other large objects will reflect and absorb WIFI signals, creating WIFI blind spots. Adjust the position of the router so that the WIFI signal is not absorbed by metal.
5)Keep your device safe
Keep your device away from water or fire. Avoid heat and humidity to prevent device damage from affecting wireless performance.
6)Adjust the antenna
Tilt the antenna to the ground. If there are two antennas, the recommended tilt angle is between 45°-60°. If there are 3 antennas, you can place the middle antenna vertically upwards.
